Day 94: Santa Maria di Leuca to Spiaggetta dell’Orte

Firstly thank you to Gaetano who has arranged for my boat to be stored in the University of Bari sports complex while I do the insulin 360 challenge. Bari is about 200 kilometers away, so the end of this chapter is fast approaching. I think it’s come at the right time – my diabetes is becoming very difficult to manage and my body is telling me it needs a break. Plus I’ll have 2 weeks to rest and prepare for insulin360. When I return I’ll hop on the ferry from Bari with my boat and start the next chapter in Albania because I’ll have run out of visa-free days in the EU.

It costs £360 to keep a child with T1D alive in SE Asia for 1 year, hence the name of the challenge. Thanks to everyone who has donated I’ve raised enough to support 10 children. Please help me hit my £5k target here

My blow-up roll mat has a hole in it so I had an uncomfortable night sleeping on the hard deck of a boat.

I felt very depleted on the water but catching the wakes of a few tourist boats got my blood pumping and after a few hours, I was feeling strong again. The plan was to do a split day, but the coastline was continuous rocks, and not wanting to paddle into a harbor I didn’t have an opportunity to land for 38 kilometers.

Nosing into cracks and caves, I enjoyed this stretch of coast, the landscape barren and wild, nothing but crumbling dry stone walls and round huts called Trulli.

After resting in a creek for a couple of hours, I paddled around Italy’s most Easterly point in the setting sun and found a rare sandy beach amongst the jagged rocks.
