Day 40: Plage Frontignan to Le Grau-de-Roi

I awoke to a dreary, drizzly day. The sea, just a few hundred metres away, blended with the sky, calm and dull. I was surprised the waves had completely died but I think the Med is like that – the wind whips up waves that disappear as quickly as they appear, and that’s why it catches people out.

A frigid offshore wind blew and the drizzle turned to rain. Getting into my wet kit wasn’t appealing but I had to get moving just to warm up, after a morning of standing still. I had that feeling of catching a cold so gritted my teeth and got on with it. It was made easier knowing this is the last wet day for a while (well, according to the forecast anyway). After 15 minutes of paddling I’d warmed up, but my muscles remained stiff and sore for a while.

The wind blew from behind and I knew it would build in to some lovely downwind. The sky darkened all around except for the horizon behind me where the sun shone golden, like it was setting. The waves on the Med are often clean and free from confusion and I sped down them towards La Grau-du-Roi.

Arriving at this town, I paddled up the boat lined canal to the kayak club. I hadn’t phoned ahead but luck was on my side, because the club was open, one person in the gym. It was wonderful to have a long, hot shower, warming myself up to the bone.

I was just looking for the best spot for the night when Nicholas, head coach at the club, arrived in his van and asked if I’d like dinner and a bed. I didn’t have to think about the answer! It is special how friendly the paddling community is. Thank you guys!

A weird seaweed blob!

When you reach Seattle in the US, you can count on a shower, a meal and a bed as well 😉
