Some people get an unmistakable sign when they go hypo, like tingly lips, while others just start feeling a bit jittery and dizzy, until blood sugars get really low. I fall in to the second camp, and that’s the feeling I got half an hour in to today’s paddle.
My sugars had shot up after breakfast so I’d stuck in three units of novorapid and got paddling. My dexcom wasn’t working but I started feeling weird and headed for shore to test, dreaming about what I’d buy to eat when I got there.
Unfortunately the town, like all others I’ve passed, was deserted save for tradesmen tarting up holiday homes, smashing down balconies and pushing rubble filled wheelbarrows around the street on wooden boards. Every shop was firmly closed, shutters tied shut, and I walked back to my boat disappointed, leaves swirling around my feet.

When I got to Makarska I took the opportunity to fuel up at a Lidl, and sat on the beach in the sun enjoying a salad I made of chickpeas, sweetcorn, feta and peppers.

I followed the ridge of mountains all day, from the warm midday sun to the pink sunset. Passing a fishing boat as darkness fell one guy shouted to me ‘where are you going?’ to which I have a nonchalant shrug, and the fishermen laughed.
Any suitable beach was where I was going, and I landed in the dark on a pebbly beach around the corner from Pisak.
